Ponda: Around 35 firemen struggled for over five hours using 250 liters of foam and 1,75,000 liters of water to extinguish a fire that engulfed a plastic warehouse at Kavlem in Ponda on Sunday.
Director of fire and emergency services, Nitin Raikar, who visited the site, said the loss is estimated at Rs 1 crore.
A total of 10 fire tenders from Ponda, Kundaim, Curchorem, Valpoi, Bicholim, Margao and Panaji made twelve trips to douse the fire that started around 3pm and was doused only by around 9.20pm. Divisional fire officer Rajendra Haldankar said that they received information about the fire only around 4pm. A fire tender was kept on standby in case the fire erupted again late at night.
The owner of the premises, Vrundavan Bishnoi, a native of Rajasthan, is a wholesaler dealing with plastic articles and had stocked goods in the one-plus-two structure that had no fire control system, not even a fire extinguisher. Bishnoi was not at the house at the time of the incident.
His brother, Jagadish, told fire officers that Bishnoi had gone to their native place and that the exact loss could be calculated only after he returned.
Raikar said that fire damaged a floor of an adjacent building. Such warehouses should not be allowed in residential areas, he said.
Kavlem sarpanch Rajesh Kavlekar was present at the site. Marcaim MLA Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar also visited the site.
