Fire breaks out in shipping room of Chesapeake middle school – The Virginian-Pilot

CHESAPEAKE — Crews brought a fire under control early Saturday at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake.

The blaze broke out in the shipping and receiving room around 7:45 a.m. — activating the fire alarm, which alerted emergency dispatchers.

Nobody was at the school when Chesapeake firefighters arrived, according to the department. Crews forced entry into the shipping room, where several pallets of paper were burning, a news release said.

“Firefighters stretched hoselines into the school while conducting searches and checking for fire spread,” department spokesperson Steve Bradley said in a statement.

The fire damaged the auditorium as well as the hallway and classrooms nearest to the shipping room, Bradley said. Further damage is being evaluated.

The fire was called under control at 8:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Crews remained to clear smoke throughout the building. The Chesapeake fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Chesapeake school officials are evaluating the damage and will notify families about any changes to the school schedule, Bradley said.
