A major fire broke out in a factory manufacturing garments of a prominent brand near Jalandhar Bypass Chowk this afternoon. The fire started in the basement where a huge stock of raw material was stored. The cause of fire was stated to be a short-circuit.
The ADFO, Bhupinder Singh, said eight fire engines were rushed to the spot and it took the firefighters nearly an hour to douse the flames. The quick response by the fire brigade made it possible for the workers of the garment factory to salvage a lot of raw material.
The fire office said more than 24 firefighters were deployed and at least 40 fire engines were used to douse the flames within a short span of time.
“But still, a lot of material was damaged and the exact extent of loss caused by the fire was still being assessed,” said a representative of the factory owner, adding that though labourers were working on the factory premises, each one of them was evacuated.
