Aurangabad: Aurangabad city’s first automated material recovery facility (MRF) for decentralized dry waste management and informal sector integration was reduced to ashes in the early hours of Monday.
It is the second major fire at the garbage depots in the past two months.
In the latest incident, due to large heaps of dry waste, the fire spread easily and brought down the shade.
MRF was inaugurated on January 26 and since then had been handling the garbage from zone-IV which has about 15 wards. Taking cognizance of the incident, Aurangabad municipal corporation (AMC) authorities rushed to the spot and carried out an inspection.
When contacted, deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) said, “In this incident, a couple of bailing machines, forklift machine, two conveyor belts, the shade as well as all the dry waste have been engulfed in fire.”
The officer said that facility was covered with CCTV cameras. “The hard disc’s casing has been damaged in the fire and attempts are being made to recover data from the hard disc,” said Jadhav.
The civic body lodged a written complaint with the Harsul police station where a case of accidental fire was registered on late evening.
