Chennai: Panic gripped residents of Surapet in Puzhal, after thick smoke engulfed the area following a major fire in a manufacturing unit of a paint company on Saturday night.
According to police, the fire broke out around 7pm. Short circuit is suspected to be the cause. No casualty was reported.
At least five fire tenders from different fire stations and two metro water tankers tried to put out the blaze. Fire and rescue services personnel battled for more than three hours to put out the fire. The fire spread to all the barrels in which the thinner and paints were stored.
There were a few workers inside the factory when the fire broke out and they managed to escape unhurt. The incident brought the traffic in the area to a halt for some time as vehicles were asked to avoid the route for a few hours.
Later, most of the vehicles were asked to take a diversion. The heat from the fire was felt around half a km away. Power supply was also cut in the area. Smoke was visible till Sunday morning. Police have registered a case. firemen are yet to ascertain the exact cause of fire.
