farmers: Wheat Procurement Drops As Farmers Prefer Open Market | Indore News

Indore: This Rabi season, district administration expects wheat procurement to be just around 50 percent of its estimated figures. The reason: Farmers have preferred to sell their crop in open market as they are being offered as high as Rs 2,700/quintal against the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,015/quintal set by state government.
In 2021, Indore had set a record of around 51,000 farmers registering with state government to sell their wheat crop at MSP but this year, this number has reduced to 37,152.
Procurement process in Indore was started on March 28. In the last one week, local administration could only manage to procure around 2,000 metric tonne of wheat against the procurement estimate of 3 lakh metric tonne this Rabi season, which is not even one percent .
During this time, Anaj Mandi in Indore recorded arrival of 43,300 sacks of wheat that was sold at minimum rate of Rs 1930/quintal to maximum Rs 2,696/quintal. A total of 1.21 lakh sacks of wheat arrived in Ujjain mandi which were sold at minimum rate of Rs 1,811/quintal and maximum rate at Rs 2,218/quintal.
According to senior administrative officials, around 25% decrease in farmers registration this Rabi season, higher price of wheat crop in open market, reducing raqba (area) of wheat farming and compulsion of linking farmers’ Aadhaar card with bank accounts are main reasons behind very few farmers selling their crop to the state government.
“We have set up 97 procurement centres across district. However, as the farmers are being offered higher prices by traders for their wheat crop than MSP, they are selling the crop in open market. Due to this, we are expecting procurement of around 1.5 lakh metric tonne wheat this Rabi season as against estimated 3 lakh metric tonne. There is, however, adequate stock of wheat for distribution among ration card holders,” ADM Abhay Bedekar said.
