Illinois 18th District U.S. Representative (R) Congressman Darin LaHood met with local farmers at the Adam’s County Farm Bureau on Friday.
On the agenda, the multiple trade agreements working their way to President Trump’s desk.
LaHood said the agreements will help open up the markets in Mexico, Canada, and China to farmers in Illinois once again.
One thing local farmers were concerned about– still getting assistance until that time comes.
“[We still need them] helping [to] make sure that farmers are still being assisted, again we’re not looking for handouts, we’re just trying to get assistance to get to the point when the markets finally settle and we get those prices that we’re looking for, farmers are going to be on an even playing field,” said Adams County Farm Bureau President Brent Clair.
LaHood said he expects the United-States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to be signed by trump on the 15th. He also talked about the Phase One of the new trade agreement with China, which he said targets tech and intellectual property issues as well as agriculture.
