For all the wisecracks New Jersey takes for the not-so-pleasant smells caused by our refineries and factories, we’ve always had at least one scent in our favor. The thick, sweet and unmistakable aroma of fresh-baked cookies. For 60 years the Nabisco plant in Fairlawn, Bergen County, rolled out massive amounts of after-school-favorites, like Oreos and Animal Crackers.
But last week, Mondelez Corp., which operates the Nabisco plant, announced it’s shutting down the factory for good. Later this year about 600 employees will be out of work. The reaction in town? A boycott. Many are saying they’ll never eat an Oreo again. Seriously. Fairlawn Mayor Kurt Peluso joins Anchor Briana Vannozzi.
