Drive finds higher price tag on bottles at S Alam oil factory

Chattogram-based S Alam Vegetable Oil Limited charged an excessive price of Tk 40 on 5-litre bottles of soya bean oil.

The company also allegedly closed the refinery and oil bottling sections amid acute crisis of soya bean oil.

The Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection authorities noticed the irregularities during a sudden drive at the factory on Sunday.

Palm oil was being supplied in drums but there was no expiry date and price sticker on the drums, assistant director Md Anisur Rahman of Chattogram DNCRP told New Age.

Anisur Rahman said, ‘The refinery and oil bottling sections remained closed. When asked why it is closed, the company officials at first said that there is no order for bottled oil so the production is stopped.’

‘But later they said that the production was closed due to maintenance of the machinery and it would take one week to repair,’ he said.

The DNCRP officials asked the company to go for production immediately to keep the oil market stable.

The company also printed Tk 835 price on 5-litre bottles while the government fixed the price Tk 795 highest, according to an official.

A DNCRP official told New Age that they informed the headquarters of the matter to take steps regarding the issue as S Alam Vegetable Oil Company is one of the largest oil production companies.

However, the DNCRP also fined Bismillah Super Shop Tk 15,000 at Bakalia area for allegedly taking Tk 5 to Tk 15 more for a bottle.

No officials of S Alam Vegetable Oil Limited could be contacted for comment on the matter.
