Meerut: A 35-year-old woman — single mother of three daughters — died in a cracker factory blast that took place in Shamli on Monday. The impact of the blast was such that pieces of the victim’s flesh were strewn around some 100 meters away from the site of explosion. Bizarrely, the owner of the factory collected the woman’s body parts, packed them in a sack and threw it away in a sugarcane field nearby to ensure that police couldn’t establish any death in the blast.
Police have booked the owner of the cracker factory in Butrada village under Babri police station, Mohd Rizwan.
Rizwan has been charged for running an illegal business and for destruction of evidence.
Circle officer Amit Saxena said, “Rizwan told us initially that five persons were missing from his factory and that he didn’t know where they were. But our team found pieces of flesh scattered in the vicinity. Around 5 pm, police managed to locate four of the missing persons, who had been asked by Rizwan to go home and keep quiet about the incident.”
SSP (Shamli) Sukirti Madhav added, “A dog squad team found mangled body parts packed in a sack in a sugarcane field around 500 meters away from the factory. Rizwan later confessed that the woman had indeed died in the blast. The victim has been identified as Virwati Devi, who was living with her parents in Butrada after separation from her husband. She has left behind three daughters.”
Police are still verifying the number of workers employed in the factory and working at the time of the blast. Rizwan had at one point of time said that 11 people were in the factory when the explosion occurred. Some villagers maintained that the factory had “30-35” people working in it.
