Hundreds employed at a Noida leather factory are under surveillance after one of their co-workers tested positive for the new coronavirus disease, Covid-19.
The patient had travelled to China — where the disease first emerged — and France, which is also battling a serious outbreak.
As many as 707 factory employees are under surveillance, and the plant is being disinfected.
Declared a “controllable” pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the coronavirus disease has killed over 4,900 and sickened nearly 135,000 across the globe, according to Reuters.
In India, the virus has infected 75 and killed one, with the highest number of cases being reported in Kerala (17, including three who have recovered).
There is currently no vaccine or special anti-viral treatment for Covid-19, but supportive care can help most patients recover, according to WHO.
Precautionary measures include regular hand-washing with alcohol-based rub or soap and water, abstaining from touching one’s face, and social distancing.
