Christian Neighbors of Douglas distribute food ahead of Thanksgiving

DOUGLAS — Christian Neighbors of Douglas held special food distribution events Monday and Tuesday, providing groceries for local families ahead of Thanksgiving.

Families were able to “shop” for traditional Thanksgiving foods, and given grocery bags to fill with canned vegetables, turkey or chicken and other items. The distribution events were held at the Community Church of Douglas.

Between distribution events like the one in Douglas on Nov. 22-23 and similar events in Pullman, 375 families were given groceries during the week of Thanksgiving, said Christian Neighbors of Douglas Executive Director JoAnne Dejonge.

Beth Huffman, who coordinated the Thanksgiving events, said around 30 volunteers helped with food distribution Tuesday. Many of the volunteers were students at Saugatuck High School, she added.

Christian Neighbors of Douglas also operates a food pantry and thrift shop, which provide temporary assistance to families in Allegan County monthly.

Similar food distribution events are planned for Christmas. To volunteer or donate to Christian Neighbors of Douglas, visit their website at christianneighborsindouglasmi.weebly.com or contact them at [email protected].
