The project, which was supposed to be completed in December 2022, is now slated to wrap up in mid-2023.

While design stages are underway as scheduled, completion of a rapid housing project planned for 120 Broad St. will be delayed due to supply issues, the city said Friday.

As a requirement of the RHI, projects are typically expected to be completed within a year of receiving funding.

“The City continues to work collaboratively with Silver Sage to find opportunities to advance the timeline of the development wherever possible,” the news release said.

The land was chosen for its size, appropriate zoning, and proximity to transit, community resources and amenities, the city’s website notes. The church building will remain and is intended to be used for programs and services for the residents, who will be housed in units built adjacent to it. A mixed-gendered approach is also being taken with the project, instead of limiting the units to women and children.

This was another sticking point for some residents who felt single men living so close to a school would be unsafe. A motion during an executive committee meeting in late January was made by Coun. Terina Shaw (Ward 7) to table the project and have administration come back with options to split it into two locations — one for women and children and another for men. The motion failed.

In an interview in late January, the city defended its mixed-gender, complete community approach to the project.

“Being able to support individuals in ways that support their overall integration into community is most important and most effectively done when we house people in proximity to the services and supports that we all utilize in our daily lives,” Kelly Husack, a policy analyst for the city, said at the time.

Future updates on the project will be shared online at Regina.ca/rapidhousing.
