LANSING, MI — Michigan environmental regulators are fining contractors and their own peers in the state facilities management department following a botched Upper Peninsula asylum demolition in which asbestos debris was dumped in a wilderness area instead of a landfill.

The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) is pursuing a $5,000 fine against the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) after inspections this spring turned up violations at the former Newberry State Hospital demolition.
