Bomb squad called to Oldham as suspicious item found underneath car

A bomb squad unit was called to Oldham this afternoon after a suspicious item was found underneath a car.

Police taped off Arkwright Street in Chadderton after they were called to the scene at around 1.30pm.

According to TfGM, Arkwright Street was closed in both directions between Lansdowne Road and Featherstall Road South.

Bomb disposal officers were seen making an assessment of the suspicious item, which was found underneath a car.

A large cordon was put in place by police with businesses in the surrounding area reportedly told to evacuate.

Footage from the scene showed a Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal unit stationed in the middle of the street, with a bomb disposal robot used.

After officers were able to make an assessment of the item, they deemed it to be non-suspicious, GMP said in a statement.

‘”There is no risk to the public,” they added.

A number of officers and crews from Greater Manchester Fire Service were also called to the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:

At around 2.30pm on Thursday 4 February two fire engines from Hollins and Chadderton fire stations were called to support colleagues from Greater Manchester Police at an incident on Arkwright Street, Oldham.”

The 100m cordon was lifted just after 5pm.
