Blue Apron is shuttering its fulfillment center in Arlington.
The company, which is a meal kit delivery service, said via a spokesperson that 240 employees will be affected by the closure, and were given a 60-day warning. The Arlington center closure is part of a reorganization to ramp up volume at its centers in Linden, New Jersey, and Richmond, California.
“We’ve always said that continuing to optimize our operations and maintain fiscal discipline are ongoing priorities as we pursue our growth strategy,” the company said in an emailed statement. “Given advancements in sourcing, production and logistics, we believe this next step … enables us to more efficiently continue to serve our existing national footprint, with the same high level of service that our customers expect of us.”
Blue Apron has struggled financially for some time, from a disappointing initial public offering in 2017 to a dismal quarterly earnings report last week. The company’s stock dropped 30% in the fourth quarter in 2019. As of Wednesday afternoon, the New York Stock Exchange had it listed at $3.60 per share.
