PATNA: Expressing satisfaction over a record procurement of 32.61 lakh metric ton (MT) paddy in Bihar till February 1 this year, CM Nitish Kumar on Wednesday asked the officials to work promptly to achieve the current year’s target of paddy procurement in the state.
The state has been given a target of procuring 45 lakh MT paddy in the current Kharif marketing season 2021-22.
While reviewing the progress in paddy procurement through videoconferencing from the ‘Sankalp’ hall of the CM residence, Nitish said this year February 15 has been fixed as the last date for paddy procurement. “All interested farmers must take advantage of the paddy procurement within the time limit,” he said.
The CM said, “In Bihar, we started the process of paddy procurement, prior to several other states, through the primary agriculture cooperative societies (PACS). The farmers are being greatly benefitted. It is a matter of great satisfaction that so far a record procurement of 32.61 lakh MT paddy from 4.5 lakh farmers has been made in the state.”
Nitish further asked the officials of cooperative and food & consumer protection departments to do regular monitoring of the procurement process so that farmers do have to face any problem. “Work promptly to procure paddy according to the target, and ensure timely payment to the farmers against the procurement,” the CM told the officials at the meeting.
Nitish also said his government was ready to provide all possible assistance to the farmers.
The CM also said in Bihar, a large number of people prefer consuming ‘Usna’ (parboiled) rice. The demand for parboiled rice is more than the other category. He asked the officials to work in the direction of increasing the number of those rice mills that produce parboiled rice. “The millers of ‘Arwa’ rice should also be motivated to convert their mills for producing ‘Usna’ rice,” Nitish said.
Earlier, the cooperative department’s secretary Bandana Prayasi, through a presentation, informed the CM about the ongoing paddy procurement in different districts. She said paddy was being procured in all districts as per the target. Preyasi also informed the CM that a record procurement of 32.61 lakh MT rice from 4.5 lakh farmers has so far been made in the state.
Similarly, the food and consumer protection department’s secretary Vinay Kumar, through a separate presentation, informed the CM about the latest status of paddy procurement, target and the status of rice mills in the current Kharif marketing season 2021-22. He also told the CM that the process of paddy procurement has been started in a phased manner. “Payments of farmers are being made on time, and the timely payment has benefited the farmers,” Vinay said.
