Better Than Factory Hemi-Powered 1970 Plymouth Superbird Headed To Mecum’s

It’s expected to sell anywhere between $500,000 and $550,000 at Mecum’s upcoming 2021 Kissimmee Auction.

The 1970 Plymouth Superbird is well-known for its wind-cheating body modifications (pointed noses and massive rear spoilers). Nearly 2,000 Superbirds were produced, the most popular of which is the #43 racer piloted by NASCAR legend Richard Petty.

Of these 2,000 classic cars, 58 rare examples were powered by 426-ci Hemi engine delivering 425 hp of max output through a four-speed transmission. Now, here’s an opportunity to bring home one of these rare and expensive Superbirds at Mecum Auctions’ Kissimmee event in January 2021.

Restored To Near-Pristine Condition In 2001

This 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird was sold to its first owner at Capitol Motors in Trenton, New Jersey. It still features its original sheet metal, original window sticker, two broadcast sheets, IBM punch card and a factory warranty card. It was restored to near-pristine condition in 2001.

Wrapped in Alpine White finish with a black vinyl top, this classic muscle car features dual outside mirrors, chrome exhaust tips, the usual aero-package for Superbirds (nose cone, rear wing, front fender air extractors, rear window glass, and Plymouth graphics) as well as premium 15-inch Rallye wheels shod with F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires.

Still Features Original Parts And Drivetrain

Meanwhile, the vinyl black interior of the 1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird features optional items that made it extremely rare. These include items such as bucket seats, rare C16 center console, Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, N85 Tic-Toc-Tach, and an AM radio.

This Superbird still features its original drivetrain that includes the 426/425 HP Hemi V8 mill (with dual 4-barrel carburetors), A833 Hemi 4-speed manual gearbox, and the Dana 60 3.54 Sure Grip differential (part of the A33 Track Pack). Supporting these elements are features such as power steering, power brakes with front discs, as well as heavy-duty cooling components.

OE Silver Certification: Way Better Than Factory

At the 2002 Mopar Nationals, the Superbird was awarded with the OE Silver Certification, which states that it’s “way better than factory” in its execution. It even features a David Wise Vehicle Visual Evaluation Report and Certificate. It was also judged the Best American Muscle Car at 2003 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

This ulta-rare Hemi Superbird is expected to be sold at Mecum’s Kissimmee Auction at a price of between $500,000 and $550,000.
