Bangladeshi-flagged cargo vessel at southern Ukrainian port attacked

The Bangladeshi government says a cargo vessel registered in the country came under artillery fire on Wednesday while it was in a port in the Black Sea in southern Ukraine.

It says one of the 29 crew members was killed.

The government said the vessel was caught in crossfire in fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces, adding that it has no idea which side was to blame.

The Russian Embassy in Bangladesh expressed its deep condolences, while noting that circumstances of the incident are being established. It also said that the Russian side made every effort to ensure the safe departure of the ship from the port.

Several vessels have been caught in crossfire in the Black Sea since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last week.

A Panamanian-flagged cargo ship owned by a Japanese shipping company was hit by a shell last Friday, injuring a Filipino crew member.
