BALLSTON SPA — Hannaford has issued a recall on 81% ground beef at the Via Rossi Way store in Ballston Spa.
Hannaford announced the recall Sunday after it was discovered some of the ground beef sold that day “may contain foreign material.” Hannaford Supermarkets external communications manager Caitlin Cortelyou explained Monday the foreign material that may have been in the product was plastic wrapping.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the Hannaford store at 3 Via Rossi Way in Ballston Spa, NY recalled 81% ground beef purchased at the store between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 21 with a sell by/use by date of August 24, 2022 because the product may contain plastic wrapping,” Cortelyou said.
Anyone who purchased the recalled product should not eat it. Hannaford advised customers to check if they have the product, The recalled ground beefs UPC numbers are: 212041410711 and 212043305565.
“We recommend that customers check their storage and freezer areas for this product, and should not eat the product,” Cortelyou said. “The impacted product or its packaging may be returned to the store for a full refund.”
The recall impacts a limited amount of product Cortelyou said. She explained all potentially impacted product was removed from store shelved and that there have been no injuries or illnesses reported in relation to the product.
Management at the store location declined to comment on the recall Monday. They referred reporters to call their corporate phone number.
The recall applies to the one store location, previous ground beef recalls at other individual stores are reported on Hannaford’s website. According to the site, there have been nine recalls ground beef throughout New York, Vermont and Maine in the past three years. Some of those recalls were because the product may contain foreign material, possibly contained metal flakes, or Styrofoam or because the product was not up to Hannaford’s standards. None of the other individual store recalls on the site occurred at the Via Rossi Way location. The recalls listed on the website date back as far as 2016.
The majority of product recalls listed on Hannaford’s website are due to manufacturer, supplier and product companies recalling items, and are part of national or state-wide product. The Hannaford website states: “Hannaford works closely with suppliers and government agencies to ensure that the foods we carry are safe.” According to the Hannaford website, any product sold through Hannaford that has been recalled by the producer is removed from their shelves.
