Guwahati: Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation for 24-year-old Maina Nayak, who sustained severe head injuries while working in CTC (crush, tear and curl) machine at Lepetkata tea factory in Dibrugarh on Tuesday and is fighting for her life at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Lakhindra Kurmi, secretary of the organisation’s Dibrugarh wing, said, “The young woman suffered serious injuries after her hair got stuck at the CTC machine while working. The management of the factory is responsible for the tragic incident because no protective gears were given to the employees during their work.”
Nayak suffered occipital bone fracture and degloving. She was first admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), from where she was shifted to GMCH for better treatment. GMCH superintendent Abhijit Sarma said she will undergo skin graft surgery in the degloved area in her head and it will take around two months for her wounds to heal. The students’ body called on deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu and submitted a memorandum demanding compensation and an inquiry into the incident. “A meeting was held with ATTSA, Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) and garden management regarding the accident of Nayak. A decision has been taken that a safety officer will be appointed in every tea garden by the garden management. The garden management has decided to bear all medical expenses of Nayak and has offered a permanent job to one member of Nayak’s family,” Pegu said.
