Arts+ 2022 summer camp lineup in partnership with Light Factory

ARTS+
Arts+ is sponsoring numerous summer education programs for children from age 4-18.

School will be over before parents know it, and Arts+ wants to use the time off to foster artistic creativity in young students.

This year, Arts+ is partnering with The Light Factory to bring two full-day camps focusing on photography. The camps will take place at the VAPA Arts Center in Uptown. Students will get the chance to learn more about digital and film photography, use Procreate on iPads, and manipulate photos on various art mediums.

“The Light Factory has a team of phenomenal instructors who are all professional photographers working in Charlotte,” President and Executive Director Devlin McNeil said. “For students as young as 10 to be able to learn from these individuals is truly a wonderful thing. Many assume youth of today to only be interested in instant gratification. The film photography class offered with The Light Factory revisits dark room film developing and other camera techniques that students really enjoy. It offers a hands-on learning environment and room to mess up, then learn from those errors and become stronger in the craft overall.”

The Film Photography Camp will take place July 25-29 for kids ages 10-15. The Artistic Lense Camp, which focuses on digital photography, is June 27-July 1 for kids ages 8-12.
Arts+ has been serving the Charlotte community for over 50 years and is one of the largest education organizations in the Southeast. The nonprofit offers a wide range of programs for kids ages 4-18, allowing them to explore art and music in a supportive, structured setting. The goal is to make arts education more accessible to all students, regardless of skill level, age, or socioeconomic status.

“Our half and full-day summer camps help to achieve this goal by fostering peer-to-peer collaboration, introducing genuine mentor relationships and ultimately helping students unlock their full potential through the power of arts education,” McNeill said. “At Arts+, our vision is to make outstanding arts education accessible to all members of the community. We believe every person — regardless of race, faith, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, disability, and ethnicity — should have the opportunity to access a transformative arts education.”

In addition to the new camps with The Light Factory, Arts+ will offer over 15 camps this summer. One of them, Discovering Music + Art, will lead children as young as age 5 through integrative STEAM activities and will end with a family Camp Showcase on the last day.

The day camps are held around Charlotte, which allows more families to participate. This year, the locations will include Uptown, Plaza Midwood, Park Road, and University.

“Diversity and accessibility have always been at the core of our efforts here at Arts+. To better serve as many areas of Charlotte as possible, our camps are located throughout the city,” McNeil said. “Combine this hub-and-spoke model with our robust financial aid program, and we are well positioned to ensure our student and faculty base is inclusive of all backgrounds.”

Any qualifying family that wishes to apply for financial aid can do so until April 29 and will be awarded up to 90% discount on camp tuitions. In addition to financial aid, Art+ offers the Studio 345 summer program, which is a free high school digital media program.
