Ammo shortage likely to impact hunting season

Hunters could have a hard time finding ammunition in the fall. That’s the warning from a local gun shop about the current ammo shortage.

“Everything is difficult right now,” said Dave Larsen, manager of Doug’s Shoot’n Sports. “There’s not a single round of ammo really available at any of the wholesalers.”

Larsen said handgun ammo is more readily available than other types, while specialty ammo is hard to find.

The big kicker might come in the fall when people are trying to find hunting ammo,” he said, “because it will be very, very difficult to get.”

Demand for guns and ammo spiked at the beginning of the pandemic and again during the civil unrest of the summer. Millions more Americans became first-time gun owners, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

That demand — combined with supply chain issues from pandemic-related problems — have caused a problem that’s expected to linger for some time. It could be at least a year before supply is more normal, Larsen said.

“Some manufacturers source stuff from around the world,” Larsen said, “and it’s still not available.”
