Americo Mezias Obituary (1929 – 2022) – Bridgeport, CT

Americo Mezias
Americo Mezias, known to all as Mac, age 92, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 28, 2022. His wife, Alice (Silva), and his eight children and ten grandchildren were all with him in his final days.
The youngest of six children, born into the Great Depression, Mac lived an amazing life filled with love, faith, and selfless commitment to his family. A lifelong resident of Bridgeport and active parishioner of St. Augustine’s Cathedral and St. Margaret’s Shrine, he served in the Army Air Corps during the Berlin Airlift. He owned a grocery store, Luzo’s Market, on Harral Avenue for many years and later sold life insurance for the Knights of Columbus. After retirement, he volunteered with the American Red Cross, assisting victims of natural disasters; and he and Alice fulfilled their dream to travel throughout the United States and the world, including special international trips with their grandchildren. His life was centered around family and friends who benefited from his keen sense of humor and down-to-earth common sense. He instilled in his children a commitment to education, a strong work ethic, natural curiosity, and love of family. He loved to read, fish, water ski (into his 60s), and listen to classical music. Mac and Alice loved to host family and friends for events ranging from holiday celebrations to Sunday afternoon football, with their inclusive theme, “the more, the merrier.”
In addition to Alice, his sweetheart of 71 years, he leaves his children and their spouses: David, Donna (Jonas Honick), Stephen (Theresa Lant), Christopher (Mary Hines), John (Lisette Losada), Lawrence, Robert (Maria Cruz) and Elizabeth (Stephane Rouilly); grandchildren: Rachael, Isaiah, Christopher, Erica, Matthew, Jessica, David, Caroline, Alexandra and Michael; his sister, Albina Cappiello; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Margaret’s Shrine, 2539 Park Avenue, Bridgeport with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Friends may attend a walk-through visitation on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Parente-Lauro Funeral Home, 559 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. At the family’s request, masks are required and those attending are asked to adhere to social distancing. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
