The Dutch mini cucumber season has begun at Bircan & Van der Wel in the Netherlands. “We have a grower who cultivates these for us on five hectares. The season should be good. The Spanish mini cucumbers are currently selling for between €2.90 and €3.20, and we’re expecting good prices for the Dutch product too,” says Ramazan Akgun.

“We’re usually very busy with Dutch lit cultivation tomatoes in the winter. But due to the high prices, there are far fewer of those. We, thus, opted to import vegetables from Turkey or Spain. Since transport from Turkey takes seven, eight days, we decided on the Spanish products. That worked out very well.”
“We sold Spanish tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, zucchini, and mini-cucumbers. The supply was fairly large, but so was the demand. We had weeks when we sold up to 40 pallets of mini cucumbers from seven different Spanish suppliers. We hope for a good continuation with the Dutch season,” says Ramazan.

“To complement the mini cucumbers, we’ll offer the whole Dutch greenhouse package this season. That includes tomatoes, bell peppers, pointed peppers, eggplants, and zucchini. Next week we’ll also start with pickles. All the increased costs mean this will be an exciting year, but we’re confident about it.”
Last year, Bircan & Van der Wel verhuisde relocated to a temporary site at the Spaanse Polder wholesale market in Rotterdam. Once that market’s upgrade is complete, the company will move to a new location.
“We do most of our sales to German wholesalers. But we also service wholesalers in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia. We’re optimistic about the future. We get more customers, more suppliers, and a wider range of products every year,’ Ramazan concludes.
