Acadiana Is Cray for Crawfish on the First Friday of Lent – News15

It’s the first Friday of lent, so folks all across Acadiana are heading to their favorite seafood spots. Though it’s not even peak season, crawfishers and wholesalers busy and are coping with the demand this season.
“It’s been good crawfish is small but plentiful,” said one crawfisher.

The mud bugs aren’t as big as he hoped but crawfisher Brady Herpin feels it’s still going to be a pretty good season.

Brady said, “…We have 37 acres right here next-door that we crawfish. We run about 400 traps and we’re averaging about a pound a trap.”

With the craziness crawfish season brings, Brady sells his Cajun crustaceans through third party whole sellers like S&S Crawfish.

“We can move anywhere from 80 to 156 a day depending on the catch,” said owner of S&S Brad Stoma.

Though it sounds like a lot of crayfish, owner Brad Stoma says they’ve sold twice as much before, but each season is different.

Brad said, “…The catch is kind of down but the demand is really high. I wish the catch would go up to where we can move a lot more crawfish especially in Lent.”

While he’s waiting for peak season towards the end of March, Brad’s cooking up some crawdads of his own.

Brad feels. “…We take a lot of pride in our boiling place.”

Each season comes with its highs and lows but both Brady and Brad say it’s all worth it.

“It’s a real competitive but I mean down here this is just a way of life,” said Brad.

S&S also boils their own mud bugs with their secret spice blend! Brad says he expects things to pick-up even more around the end of March. You can get a taste your self at 2856 Crowley Rayne Hwy. Tell them News 15 sent you!
