Hazardous material leaks onto roadway after two semi trucks collide in Green Co.

GRANT COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) – A wreck involving two tractor-trailers, one of which was carrying hazardous material, shut down a stretch of Highway 151 between Platteville and Dickeyville, in Grant County, for much of Tuesday morning.

According to an update from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, a semi carrying Aluminum Brightner, an inhalation hazard and corrosive material, crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer carrying canned vegetables that had slowed down for a rollover wreck.

The Aluminum Brightner was being transported in 330-gallon totes, and a leak from the impact of the crash led to about 500 gallons of the chemical to spill onto the roadway.

Both drivers were taken to a nearby hospital and are reportedly in good condition.

Emergency management was able to get one lane moving again in each direction around 10:30 a.m. The entire highway reopened around 2:30 p.m.

A spokesperson for the agency said two homes were evacuated because of the wreck as a precaution.

This crash is not related to another one along Highway 151 in Grant County Tuesday, in which an elderly Wisconsin couple accidentally drove off the highway and down into a creek. That couple is now in the hospital being treated for injuries.
