In 2017, after five years of building out and running jobs aggregation platform, Insidify, Emmanuel Okeleji and his team pivoted due to market realities. Job aggregator sites are an American or European solution and are modelled after the way the markets would seek out or recruit human resource, Okeleji explained. A year after the pivot, the medical doctor turned tech entrepreneur, led his team to launch an applicant tracking system (ATS) which employers were willing to pay for. Within a short while, they were approached by one of their ATS clients to build a human resource management system for $26,000. In South Africa, food delivery company, Mr D Food will now deliver drugs. The startup has partnered with a local pharmacy, Medirite to deliver to users who place their drug orders with the pharmacy. To have them delivered, users will have to request for delivery through the Mr D Food app quoting their Medirite order number. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the ride-hailing industry causing companies to find new revenue streams or in some cases find ways to support people affected by the crisis.
Amitruck, a Kenyan logistics startup has raised an undisclosed figure from GreenTec Capital. The platform which connects cargo owners with trucking logistics professionals will use the money to scale its business. Amitruck has presence in Germany and Kenya. Some of its clients include Twiga Foods, Skygarden, Toptank and Kenafric.

For the past 13 years, M-Pesa has been a shiny, global example of mobile money innovation out of Africa. Although it has been an African product all these years, it has not necessarily been run under African management. This week, Safaricom and Vodacom acquired the intellectual property rights to the M-Pesa brand from Vodafone. Both companies will now have full control of the M-Pesa brand, product development and support services through a joint venture. Alex has the full gist here.

South Africa’s communications minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has been placed on a two-month unpaid leave for violating the country’s lockdown rules. Ndabeni-Abrahams went to lunch with a former minister who later clarified that the former was there to pick up personal protective equipment (PPE) for students who were working on COVID-19 digital services. The communications minister has apologized for her misconduct. South Africa is one of the African countries worst-hit by COVID-19. It had 1,845 cases as of yesterday.
Airtel Nigeria has announced a $4.9 million fund to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country. The money will be used to support government agencies, provide medical equipment and facilities. The telco is also offering free SMS services to its customers as well as zero-rating access to access educational and health websites. In Zambia, MTN has partnered with Opera Mini to offer customers free browsing, up 50 MB daily, on Opera Mini and Opera News through the pandemic.
