Firefighters subdue four-alarm warehouse blaze in Dallas’ Fair Park area

It took more than 100 Dallas firefighters to subdue a four-alarm fire that sent smoke billowing across Interstate 30 near Fair Park, slowing traffic in the area.

Crews were dispatched about 5:41 p.m. to a food distribution warehouse in the 1800 block of Chestnut Street after multiple 911 calls, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said. The blaze, just south of I-30 near the Austin Street Shelter, was listed as a two-alarm fire at the time.

When firefighters arrived, they saw flames erupting from the side of the large structure, Evans said. Crews attempted to initiate an offensive attack, but with the fire well advanced, commanders pulled crews back and upgraded the blaze to a second-alarm fire.

The fire was bumped to a three alarms at 7:18 p.m., with flames continuing to blow from the roof of the building. Four minutes later, it was upgraded to four alarms, with crews using ground and aerial lines in an effort to drown out the flames.

Evans said a “handful of people” were inside the building, closing up operations, when the blaze began. All made it out safely and no injuries were reported.

The warehouse sustained a great amount of damage, he said, and it is unknown whether the department will be able to conduct a thorough investigation. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as a result.
