Banana Factory to exhibit behind-the-scenes photos of Palmer firefighters with “SmokeEaters”

Often, the most fascinating art comes from across the globe or from hundreds of years ago. But sometimes, like in the case of the Banana Factory’s new exhibit, it can come right from your own backyard. Though, if the subjects of photographer Peter Keady’s exhibit were in your backyard, that’s probably bad news.

Keady’s project “SmokeEaters,” which looks at the lives of volunteer firefighters for the Palmer Municipal Fire Department, will be on display from March 14 to April 26 in the Banana Factory’s Banko Family Room Gallery. There will be a reception for the show as well as an artist talk from Keady from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 3.

Keady’s 60-image exhibit garners its name from the time that firefighters didn’t have breathing apparatuses and regularly inhaled smoke, unfortunately earning them the name “smoke eaters.”

The artist also serves as the chaplain for the department, so his perspective is empathetic and familiar. The photographs are a behind-the-scenes look at the department members’ everyday heroism in the face of danger.

“SmokeEaters” will also be published as a book, with proceeds going towards the The Chaplain’s Scholarship at the Palmer Municipal Fire Department.
