INDORE: Death due to pneumonia among children below five years of age has witnessed rise of 10 per cent despite registering decline of nine per cent in total number of acute respiratory infection cases in 2019 as against 2018. According to figures of district integrated disease surveillance programme, 107 children under five years of age died in 2019 against 93 in 2018.
In the same period district witnessed decline in number of patients suffering from acute respiratory infection with number of patients going down to 31,613 in 2019 from 33,623 in 2018. CMHO Dr Praveen Jadia said, “The numbers of death of children in district have gone down in last five years though it witnessed increase of ten per cent in 2019 in comparison to 2018.” The pneumonia in children and deaths caused because of it is more in winters. The figures also depend on climatic condition of that year, said Jadia. Surveillance has led to increase in reporting of number of cases in last few years. The awareness programme is also helping in reducing risk, said Jadia. According to figure of ministry of health and family welfare tabled in Rajya Sabha in December, Madhya Pradesh constituted 14.17% of total deaths of children under five in first seven months of financial year 2019-20. The state recorded 957 deaths of under five children because of pneumonia last year till October. This was highest in the country till October in this financial year.
NHM’s Reproductive Child Health in charge Dr Manish Singh said, “State government is going to launch an intensive campaign with Centre in phase wise manner to curb pneumonia deaths in state.”
