Flash flood kills seven students in Java

A flash flood has killed seven students who were practising scouting skills on a river bank in Indonesia’s central Java island, a disaster management official says.

Nearly 250 junior high school students were walking along the river in Sleman district on Friday when it burst its bank and swept away many of them, said Agus Wibowo, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency.

Three other students were still missing while 23 were hospitalised, he said.

Agus said the flood was triggered by heavy rain in the upstream area.
