Cops: Frankfort man possessed, distributed child pornography

A Frankfort man was arrested for possessing and distributing child pornography, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said deputies received a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program about Steven Cardenas, 30.

On Friday, deputies executed a search warrant at Cardenas’ home in the 20700 block of South Woodlawn Court, she said. The deputies collected his computer and two phones during the search, Hoffmeyer said.

The deputies then brought Cardenas in for questioning, she said. During the interview, Cardenas made incriminating statements, she said.

Hoffmeyer said he was arrested for possessing and distributing child pornography.

“He was uploading child pornography and also sharing it,” she said.

Cardenas was booked into the Will County jail about 11 a.m. Friday on probable cause of child pornography, jail records show. No formal charges had been filed against Cardenas as of Friday afternoon, according to court records.

Cardenas is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Saturday, according to jail records.

The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program is “a national network of 61 coordinated task forces representing over 4,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies,” according to its website.

“These agencies are continually engaged in proactive and reactive investigations and prosecutions of persons involved in child abuse and exploitation involving the Internet,” the site said.
