Bloomin’ Brands (BLMN)
Jana Partners reported that it holds 6,404,324 common shares of the casual-dining chain, a 7.4% interest in the stock. Jana revealed that it plans to nominate two directors for election at the upcoming 2020 annual shareholder meeting. In the event that three Bloomin’ Brands directors stand for election, a third nominee has also been designated.

Starboard Value reported an initial stake of 4,778,762 shares in the financial-technology company on Feb. 3. No reason was given for the investment other than the stock was viewed as “undervalued and represented an attractive investment opportunity.” Starboard did not reveal any plan or proposal in regard to its now 9.3% interest in Green Dot.

CAI International (CAI)
Weiss Capital lifted its interest in the freight and logistics firm to about 8.2%. Weiss bought a total of 148,812 shares from Dec. 3, 2019, through Jan. 31, 2020, at prices ranging from $23.68 to $29.25 each, bringing its total stake in CAI to 1,430,751 shares.
Verso (VRS)
SCW Capital Management and Hoak Fund Management reported higher stakes of a respective 1,985,392 and 979,912 shares in the coated-paper manufacturer. Combined, the total 2,965,304 shares equal about an 8.5% interest in Verso’s outstanding stock. SCW and Hoak added a total of 329,859 shares at prices from $15.51 to $17.57 each during the span of Dec. 27, 2019, through Feb. 3, 2020.
Following the shareholders’ approval of the sale of two Verso mills during the Jan. 31 annual meeting, the investors “intend to provide input…regarding the expected return of capital” from the sale proceeds, “including ways to optimize that process.”
Cott (COT)
P2 Capital increased its holding of the beverage firm to eight million shares after it added 3,483,361 shares to its stake. The additional shares were acquired on Jan. 15 through Jan. 31 at per share prices of $14.28 to $15.21 and now give P2 a 5.9% interest in Cott. No specifics were cited in relation to the investment. Primo Water
(PRMW) in an all-cash deal valued at $775 million. That move, plus Cott’s sale of its subsidiary S&D Coffee & Tea last week, are part of Cott’s strategic plan to remake itself into a pure-play water distributor.

Homology Medicines (FIXX)
Deerfield Management reduced its holding of the genetics-biotech company to 4,087,305 shares. Deerfield sold 1,158,333 shares from Jan. 24 to Jan. 30 at prices ranging from $15.40 to $16.34 apiece, leaving Deerfield Management with a 9.3% interest in Homology Medicines’ outstanding stock.
