Budget 2023: Defence Ministry to focus on procurement, maintenance, aid and welfare of veterans

KLUANG: The RM17.37bil allocation given to the Defence Ministry will be detailed within the next two months and will focus on four main agendas, says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

The Defence Minister added that next year’s allocation is an increase of RM1.23bil, or 7.8% compared to this year’s budget.

“The allocation comprises Mindef’s operational expenditure of RM11.41bil and development expenditure of RM5.96bil.

“We will be detailing how we can fully utilise this budget in line with the policy and plans under Mindef together with the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

“Most importantly, we will be focusing on four main agendas, namely the procurement of new assets, the maintenance of the current assets, aid and welfare of the veterans, and a housing programme for the ATM,” he said.

He said this after the closing ceremony of the Karnival Tentera Darat 2022 at the Stadium Mini, Taman Sri Lambak, here on Sunday (Oct 9).

Hishammuddin stated that any decision or announcement made by the Defence Ministry and ATM following this will prioritise these four issues.

“I am well aware of the needs of our army, air force, and navy, and we will discuss the details of this later.

“But at the same time, we have to remember that this budget is only for one year and there is more than one way for us to improve the strength of our army and Defence Ministry.

“I have also received a recent call from the US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin regarding the issues in Ukraine and he has agreed to see how they can assist us in this matter.

“We have many allies out there, and this includes countries from the Middle East and surrounding Asean countries,” he said, adding that Mindef will always prioritise the safety and security of the country.
