Department of Defense Announces Prohibition in DFARS on Certain PFOS and PFOA Procurement > U.S. Department of Defense > Release

Today, the Department of Defense has issued a Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) class deviation to prohibit procuring “covered items” that contain perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) or perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

This restriction includes nonstick cookware or cooking utensils for use in galleys or dining facilities; and upholstered furniture, carpets, and rugs that have been treated with stain-resistant coatings.

This change in the DFARS takes effect April 1, 2023, but has been issued in advance to capture open solicitations that will be awarded on or after April 1, 2023. The prohibition satisfies requirements in section 333 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 and takes another step towards DoD’s efforts in reducing potential exposure to PFAS.
