First Indonesian Supermarket Finally Opens In US

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t dampened the dreams of Maya Damayanti, an expatriate who lives in Linwood, US, to open a supermarket there for Indonesian products.

Bandung expatriates, who have been living in the United States for nearly twenty years, finally held the grand opening ceremony of the first Indonesian supermarket in the Emerald City.

The wholesale store named Maya Asian Market sells various Indonesian food and beverage products such as instant noodles, herbal drinks and medicines, snacks, snacks, prepared spices, tempeh, bakwan, meatballs, coffee, tea and various packaged drinks. Various other Indonesian products which are preferred by people of Indonesian origin and even Asia in this region.

Indonesian Consul General in San Francisco Prasetyo Hadi was present to deliver a speech at the opening of the Maya Asian Market store. Prasetyo Hadi admitted that he is proud of Maya’s achievements.

“The Indonesian Consulate in San Francisco is proud of Mrs. Maya’s efforts and perseverance to create an Indonesian product store and continues to promote and assist Indonesian stores to all partners in the US North West Coast work area. 77 Indonesia Aug In 2022,” he said.

Maya, the shop owner, seems overjoyed as it has long been her dream to open and own a wholesale store for Indonesian branded products in the US. However, he said that the license process to open his shop was quite lengthy and cumbersome.

Various parties were involved in the conflict, including the Linwood City Licensing Office, architects, contractors, firefighters, electrical authorities, plumbers, and last but not least, suppliers of goods and food items.

The woman, who has pursued a career as a real estate manager, said, “Starting pioneering from 2021, the process takes about a year, from preparation and coordination to ensure a safe supply of goods and food, to approval from the city government. “

According to Maya, opening a big shop or wholesaler in another country requires not only big capital, but also determination and strong steps. Starting the process from scratch also requires knowledge, perseverance and a high degree of patience.

Maya hopes the establishment of the supermarket can cure the craving of many people around Seattle and the Indonesian diaspora. They can shop for Indonesian foods and ingredients so they can be creative in cooking Indonesian specialties.
