Crime scene declared as police probe fatal fire in shipping container

A crime scene has been set up in north Queensland after a man died in a fire overnight.

Passing drivers raised the alarm with emergency services about 10pm after seeing flames from a storage yard in the Townsville suburb of Mount Louisa.

Three fire crews spent about an hour putting out the blaze, which gutted a shipping container and damaged a caravan which was parked next to it.

After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found the body of a man aged in his 40s.

Examinations into the cause of the fire are underway with police forensics, detectives and fire investigators on the scene.

Hayley Micheluzzi works at a business nearby and said it was shock to see a crime scene established in her street.

“There is obviously a lot of cars but never police. It’s normally tradies and people coming to work,” she said.

“It’s quite sad what has happened — it doesn’t happen around here usually.”

Authorities are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time to come forward.
