Ex-Indian Ambassador to China, Gautam Bambawale on Pelosi visit to Taiwan

  • Visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is one of the highest-level visits from US to Taiwan in last 5 yrs. I don’t think a visit at this level took place in near past. Obviously it’s causing tensions b/w US-China.
  • China made statements that they don’t want this visit to go ahead but today’s geopolitics is characterised by competition b/w China & USA. So, the moment China said this visit shouldn’t happen, it almost became certain that Nancy Pelosi will have to visit Taiwan.
  • That took place, she met all top leaders of Taiwan, including President of Taiwan. They had a joint press conference. It shows that US is fully supportive of democracy in Taiwan, current govt of Taiwan & will help Taiwan in case they have any problems with China.
  • China has reacted and announced that from 4th Aug, there will be a series of military and naval exercises in Taiwan Strait – that is their way of saying what US did isn’t correct. So, it’s a difficult situation for both countries, the region and the world as a whole.
