Demolition of Lynbrook feather factory begins to make way for controversial apartment complex

The
demolition of a building known to many in Lynbrook as the feather
factory started over the weekend, but with that demolition has come some
controversy.

Many have called the building an eyesore over the years. It’s being taken down to make way for a seven-story apartment complex.

Last year, the developer received approval from village officials to demolish the building. It has been vacant since 2008.

The new $95 million 201-unit apartment complex will only have 10% of the units made into affordable housing.

The other space will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Village
officials and some residents say it’s a good fit for the downtown to
hopefully revitalize the area, but others say there’s too much
development in the village and not enough green space.

Once the building is fully demolished, it will take up to two years to build the apartment complex.
