Dear Ina,

Recently, on Facebook Marketplace, there are ads with the note “ships to you” and no address for the sellers. The listed shipping charge is RIDICULOUSLY low.

For example: a lawn tractor (approx weight 220 lbs!) with a listed shipping charge of $10.80 standard mail.

I contacted the seller and asked if I could come pick up the item and pay cash.

They said no. Shipping only.

There are dozens of similar ads in the home and garden category. Is this some new scam? How does it work?

From the Editor: We found a discussion board where people were discussing listings offering low-shipping on heavy yard equipment in December 2020. They appeared to be skeptical that anyone who sent payment to those sellers would ever receive the item.
