There was an episode of “Saturday Night Live” with a skit featuring John Belushi as a guy opening a shop in a mall that only sold Scotch tape. Period. I found it very funny and also a bit disconcerting because, well, I’d go in a Scotch tape shop and browse even though it was exclusively rows and rows of Scotch tape.
Not sure if this explains why I love Capizzano Olive Oils & Vinegars in Pawcatuck — which sells olive oils and vinegars — and Westerly Packing, which sells meat. Of course, each establishment has much more than just their titular products. Who knew there were so many types of olive oil? The Capizzano folks do, plus they offer all sorts of clever things that enhance the olive oil and/or vinegar experiences. And over at Westerly Packing? Yes! More varieties of meat and game than a million Ted Nugents could dream of, but it’s also a specialty foods shop, a wholesaler and a grocery proper.
The one thing I didn’t see at either place? Scotch tape.
