Factory Farms
Factory farm. It sounds so…mechanical. Cold. Unfeeling.
We see and hear the words “factory farm” everywhere on social media and in the news. Major brands paint “factory farms” as places that are uncaring and with little interaction between humans and animals. Here’s Madi Clark with the Washington Policy Center discussing peoples’ perceptions about farms in general:
“A lot of time when people aren’t familiar with agriculture, they tend to jump back and go ‘it’s the factory farms taking over, they’re huge, they’re collosal, they’re these monolithic operations that don’t care about the lowly person that’s buying this in the grocery store, when it is still a family operation’.”
But Jennifer Dorsett, an American Farm Bureau Federation field editor had this to say in an opinion piece: You know what I see? About 98% of farms are family farms, according to the Agriculture Department. I travel all over talking to farmers and ranchers, seeing how they operate and how much they truly care about their families, livestock, land and the crops they grow. These farms are owned by families. In fact, about 98% of farms are family farms, according to the Agriculture Department.
