Stock worth lakhs gutted at Ponda food factory | Goa News

Ponda: A fire broke out in the stockroom of the Devyani Foods factory at Usgao-Ponda on Friday. Wafer cones and packaging materials worth several lakh rupees were gutted in the blaze.
The Ponda fire and emergency services personnel and factory staff battled the flames for over five hours.
Divisional officer of the Ponda central fire station, Rajendra Haldankar, said that the collective effort saved the factory. The stockroom had a large stock of butter, and if it had caught fire, it would have been very difficult to control the blaze, he said.
Haldankar said the factory’s well-maintained fire fighting system with operational water hydrants helped them check the fire from spreading to adjacent rooms that were full of butter stock.
“We used a total 75,000 liters of water. We used two fire tenders with 12,000 liters and 6,000 liters. But the factory water hydrant saved us the time and effort it would have otherwise taken in going to Ponda to refill the tenders,” he said.
“A spark generated in a window AC ignited a corrugated box inside the stockroom from where it spread,” he said.
