Madurai: Farmers from Madurai have urged the district administration to set up a permanent paddy procurement centre. They made the demand during the farmers’ grievance redressal day held at the district collector office on Friday.
The farmers told collector Dr Aneesh Sekhar that the cultivation pattern is not uniform across the district. There are some blocks where the farmers go for three term crops. Since the direct procurement centres are established only during the major harvesting season, a sizable number of farmers who manage to cultivate paddy during the off-season are left in the lurch to find the right market, they said. Farmers also complained that the crop insurance scheme is not providing them relief when the harvests fail.
