Background Information

As of the 31 January 2022, Nuclear Waste Services has been set up to combine all of the NDA Waste activities, giving greater flexibility and driving improvements and synergies across the NDA Group. This brings together LLW Repository Limited, Radioactive Waste Management Limited and the NDA Integrated Waste Management Programme (each with their own IT teams, infrastructure, and systems).

Role Description

  • Provide a technical waste and material management support service to the LLWR Site
  • Develop and implement the strategy for radioactive waste, stockpile and nuclear material accountancy and safeguards management across the LLWR Site
  • Promote and implement the waste hierarchy across the LLWR Site
  • Develop and implement the LLWR Site Joint Waste Management Plan and support the development of inventory management and reporting tools (UKRWI and WIF)
  • Produce reports relating to Nuclear Material Accountancy & Safeguards
  • Provide a technical stockpile support service to the LLWR Site.

Duties

  • To continually review and develop arrangements covering the characterisation and consignment of site generated low level waste, and stockpiled material arrangements on behalf of the process owner
  • To continually review, develop and implement arrangements covering nuclear materials, accountancy and safeguards for the site on behalf of the process owner
  • To produce appropriate characterisation and consignment documentation for low level waste and plutonium contaminated material generated by operations on the LLWR site
  • Ensure representation of the Waste Delivery Team at committees such as SRCs, MEHSCs, PMPs and NWP forums etc
  • Provide information/ data to support the production of the Joint Waste Management Plan and inventory management reporting tools (WIF and UKRWI)
  • Ensure customers are supported in the development and evaluation of Best Available
    Technique documents.

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in STEM or Waste Management (or relevant experience)
  • Knowledge and experience of application of Waste Acceptance processes, treatment and
    disposal facilities Conditions for Acceptance/ Waste Acceptance Criteria.
  • Working experience of relevant waste legislation (environmental permitting Regulations and Hazardous Waste regulations)
  • Knowledge and experience of destructive and non-destructive assay techniques and
    experience of producing sampling and characterisation plans/ strategies (including fingerprint derivation and radioactive waste activity assessment for waste routing)

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experienced in the application of Data Quality Objectives (DQO), Data
    Quality Assessment (DQA).
  • Radioactive Waste Advisor (or ability to achieve Corporate Radioactive Waste Advisor).
  • Familiarisation of the National Waste Programme and current programme of work.
  • Ability to represent LLWR at various forums.
  • Ability to liaise with regulatory bodies (such as ONR and the EA).
  • Knowledge/ awareness of the Nuclear Safeguards Regulations 2019 (NSR19).
