Cape Town launches alternative energy tender procurement process

CAPE TOWN – Cape Town has launched tenders to procure 300 megawatts of renewable energy.

The city is aiming to reduce its reliance on Eskom and to stop rolling outages in the Mother City.

The announcement was made at the Solar Power Africa Conference.

But according to Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, while the procurement process will yield big benefits, it won’t eliminate Eskom altogether.

Recently, the mayor detailed plans to look for Independent Power Producers after the country was plunged back into stage two power cuts.

The projects are expected to cut the cost of power and create jobs.
