Govt forces Rostelecom to scrap tablet procurement contracts for population census

The Russian government has obliged national operator Rostelecom to annul the contracts awarded for the supply of tablets  running on the Aurora OS for use in Rosstat’s 2020 national population census, reports Cnews.ru. The contracts for 360,000 tablets worth RUB 5.75 billion were awarded to Russian companies Tegrus and Distribution Centre.

All the bids tendered for the contracts involved devices produced in China. The government requires that tablets produced in Russia should be chosen. This could raise the price to RUB 8 billion.
