NSW COVID cases today: Pressure mounts on Health department as hospitalisations climb on another deadly day

NSW has recorded almost 50,000 new COVID-19 cases and a further 20 deaths despite authorities reassuring residents the Omicron wave is near its peak.

Another 48,768 COVID-19 cases were announced on Saturday as the state continues to works through a backlog of results from rapid at-home tests, which were only able to be reported from Wednesday.

Of those infections, 21,748 were reported through RATs and 27,020 came from PCR tests.

The number of patients in hospital is still steadily climbing, now at 2576, but is expected to plateau next week.

Some 193 people are in intensive care.
