Abandoned cargo ship drifted through Taiwan Strait and ran aground – Maritime Bulletin

General cargo ship HOMAO was disabled after understood, water ingress in engine room, and issued distress signal, at around 0800 LT Dec 24 some 50 nm north of Keelung, northern Taiwan, reported Taiwan English News. 9 crew abandoned the ship shortly after issuing distress signal, understood they’re safe. The ship was en route from Danang Vietnam, sailing in NE direction, probably to Japanese or Korean port. Kaohsiung-based salvage tug SALVAGE CHAMPION (IMO 7530444) was sent to take abandoned, drifting HOMAO on tow. Understood HOMAO was taken on tow and towed for some time in rough weather conditions, but broke off towing line, and drifted aground on Xianjiao island coast, Penghu islands, Taiwan, Taiwan Strait. On Dec 27 freighter was reported by Taiwanese Maritime Authorities to be located in shallows area off Xianjiao island, HOMAO has some 20 tons of fuel on board, character of cargo, if any, unknown.
